A fixed mass of an ideal gas is allowed to undergo a thermodynamic process which carries it from an equilibrium state (X) to another state (Y). Four different quantities are monitored: the heat supplied to the gas (Q), the work done by it (W), the change in its internal energy (ΔU), and the change in its entropy (ΔS) defined by,
