Chloromethane on treatment with excess of ammonia yields mainly:

1. N, N-dimethylmethanamine
2. N-methylmethanamine (CH3 —NH—CH3 )
3. Methanamine (CH3 NH2 )
4. Mixture containing all these in equal proportion.

Hint:  Primary amine is the major product

Chloromethane on reaction with an excess of ammonia reagent produces methamine as the major product.\(\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{Cl}+\mathrm{NH}_{3}(Excess) \rightarrow \mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{NH}_{2}+\mathrm{HCl} \)

Although, if the two reactants will react in an equal amount, then a mixture of products is formed as a primary, secondary, and tertiary amine.


Here, an excess amount of ammonia is used hence, only primary amine is obtained.
